Getting Started

GettingStarted.jpgThe initial consultation will include a complete review of you or your child's past medical and dental history. We will review your goals and answer any questions about braces. Dr. McDonough will then complete a detailed examination of the face, jaws and teeth, and review computerized patient information in order to help you assess your or your child's current problems and the possible treatment options.

Dr. McDonough will answer the following questions:

  • Can the problem be corrected?
  • How long will it take?
  • How much will it cost?
  • What kind of appliances or braces will be necessary?
  • What are the pros and cons of orthodontic treatment?
  • What must the patient do for successful treatment?

Once you understand what is necessary, complete diagnostic records will be needed.

It is important to note that Dr. McDonough works in association with your family dentist in treating your orthodontic needs but he does not replace your family dentist, who remains your primary dental provider.

Orthodontic Records

Prior to beginning treatment, study models, necessary X-rays and photographs of your face and teeth will be necessary. These records are used to diagnose the problem and develop a proper plan for you or your child's treatment.

studymodel.jpgStudy Models – Used to duplicate the size and relationship of the teeth. The two impressions only take 30 seconds, each and come in 14 flavors.  We also have the iTero digital scanner which can be used to replace the impressions.

pano.jpgPanoramic X-ray – One digital X-ray used to evaluate the development of all the teeth. The machine spins around your head, and nothing has to go in your mouth.

ceph.jpgCephalometric digital X-ray – Evaluates the growth and position of the jaws. This is valuable information to achieve proper function and esthetics of the face.

Photographs – The face and teeth are imaged with a digital camera and put into our computer. Photos are important to evaluate the position and color of the teeth as well as any changes that will enhance facial esthetics.
