About Dr. McDonough

Dr. Mark W. McDonough is Board Certified and a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics. He was voted by his peers as one of "The Best Dentists in America" and was nominated by New Jersey Monthly Magazine as one of "The Best Dentists in New Jersey" in their July 2005 issue. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a Doctorate in Dental Medicine (DMD). He interned at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City as a general practice resident and obtained his Certificate in Orthodontics from Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia. At Albert Einstein Medical Center, he completed three years of Orthodontic specialty training in conjunction with post-doctoral studies at the University of Pennsylvania, Division of Advanced Dental Education.

As well as being an experienced orthodontist, Dr. McDonough is also a professor of orthodontics at Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia since 1995. He has given lectures at the Middle Atlantic Society of Orthodontics meeting, The Philadelphia Dental Society meeting, The Bucks County Dental Society meeting and The Mercer Dental Society meeting. Through his studies at the Lancaster Cleft Palate Center, he gained experience in treating patients with dental facial deformities, such as cleft palates and severe jaw discrepancies. This treatment involves a team approach working in conjunction with an oral surgeon combined with orthodontic treatment.

Most recently, Dr. McDonough was selected to be on the Editorial Board of Orthodontic Practice - US.  This is a national journal which promotes excellence in orthodontics and covers a full range of clinical and practice management topics.

Dr. McDonough has served on the Executive Committee of the Mercer Dental Society for eight years and is currently Past-President. He is a member of the American Association of Orthodontists, American Board of Orthodontics, Middle Atlantic Society of Orthodontics, Pennsylvania Association of Orthodontists, American Dental Association and the New Jersey Dental Association. For four years, he was Chairman of the National Children's Dental Health Month for the Mercer Dental Society and ran a free countywide mouth guard program.

Dr. McDonough has consistently been an early adopter of new technology in the orthodontic profession in order to provide patients with the best and most convenient results. He was among the first orthodontists to incorporate digital photographs and digital x-rays for diagnostic and treatment planning purposes. He has used dental lasers for many years to painlessly reshape gum tissue. One of the current “new topics” in orthodontics is temporary implants to move teeth in a manner not previously possible. Dr. McDonough saw the promise of temporary implants and first used this technology in 2002 and it is just now becoming a “standard of care” elsewhere.

Dr. McDonough is married and the proud father of three girls. He enjoys surfing and summers at the Jersey Shore and skiing in the winter. He has completed two New York City marathons, the 500-mile Anchor House Bicycle Ride for Runaways and dozens of triathlons. He is an active member of St. James Church in Pennington.
